Virginia Mae Dougherty
October 3, 1935 - June 16, 2025
Virginia Mae Dougherty, affectionately known as “Ginny,” passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, in Wilmington, Delaware at the age of 89. She will be lovingly remembered for her courageous strength as a two-time breast cancer survivor, her independence, and love for family and friends.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 3, 1935, Ginny was the daughter of the late Walter and Lena (Sutton) Farrall. She graduated from Wilmington High School, DE, class of 1952 and remained close with her classmates throughout her life. After high school, Ginny married her high school sweetheart Ronald E. “Ron” Dougherty, on August 18, 1956, in Wilmington, DE. They built a loving home together in Newark, Delaware, where Ginny devoted over 25 years to raising children as both a homemaker and in-home babysitter.
Ginny was known for her “sweet tooth,” and love of country line dancing. She stayed active well into her 80’s- cutting her own grass and driving herself wherever she pleased. She was an active member at the Newark and Mid-County Senior Centers, as well as the Howard J. Weston Community Center. Ginny also adored animals and was a lifelong fan of Barry Manilow’s music.
In addition to her parents, Ginny was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ron; and brothers, William and Walter Farrall. She is survived by her children, Linda Kresge, David Dougherty, and Diane Dougherty-Denning (Bill); grandchildren, Zachary Kresge (Megan) and Samuel Denning; great-granddaughter, Riley Kresge; sister, Barbara A. (Farrall) Jordan; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will carry her memory forward.
The family wants to thank the compassionate staff at Gilpin Hall and AccentCare Hospice for their gentle care and support in Ginny’s final journey.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 pm on Friday, June 27th, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720.
Ginny was a supporter of many charities. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
