William E. “Bill” Jordan

July 17, 1938 - January 30, 2025

William E. “Bill” Jordan, age 86, of New Castle, DE, quietly passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Wilmington, DE on July 17, 1938, he was a son of the late Eleanor (Stierle) and David W. Jordan, Jr. Bill enlisted in the Delaware National Guard in 1955, where he served for 11 years. During his time with the Guard, he worked in communications, supply, and as Platoon Sergeant, demonstrating his leadership and dedication to his country. After graduating from P.S. DuPont High School, Bill began his career with DuPont, working in the general mailroom and the textile fibers department mailroom until 1962. In the spring of 1962, Bill joined Amoco Chemicals Corporation (formerly Avisun), where he worked until his retirement in 1980, following a devastating explosion at the New Castle plant. After a brief time with National Vulcanized Fiber Company in Hockessin, Bill found his calling in serving others, working full time as a funeral assistant at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory until 2002. He continued his service there part-time until 2022, becoming an integral part of the funeral home’s compassionate team.

Throughout his life, Bill exemplified devotion to his family, faith, and service to others. He was a hands-on father who was actively involved in his children’s lives, volunteering countless hours to support their school activities. He was a member of the PTA and Tennis Booster Club, and served as Band Booster President. Bill also served as president of the New Castle-Gunning Bedford PTA.

A dedicated member of Asbury United Methodist Church for 37 years, Bill and his wife, Barbara, shared a special bond as Acolyte Chairpersons. Together, they found joy in working with the children and preparing them for Sunday services. They were active members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church since 1999, where Bill contributed to the church community as an usher, liturgist at Sunday morning services, and occasionally assisted with communion. In September 2021, Bill and Barbara also joined New Castle United Methodist Church, where they continued their strong commitment to their faith.

Bill was also involved in the Masonic Fraternity. He was a member of Lafayette Lodge #14 A.F. & A.M., a life member of Washington and Lafayette Chapter #1, R.A.M., and Trinity Commandery No. 3. A life member of the Wilmington Manor Fire Company, Bill was committed to his role in the fire service, where he served as Treasurer and Fire Police. His contributions extended beyond the local firehouse, as he was a past member of the New Castle County Fire Police Association and the Delaware State Fire Police Association, where he held the position of Assistant Secretary.

Bill’s legacy will live on through his children, family, and the countless lives he touched through his unwavering commitment to service, faith, and love.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Anna, and his stepmother, Mary. Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara; children, Gregg Jordan (Liz), Glenn Jordan, and Cindy Miller (Jeff); grandchildren, Megan and Matt Miller, Sydney, Ben, Sean, and Brendan Jordan; and great grandsons, Christian, Jameson, Rowan, and Everett.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to AccentCare Hospice for their compassionate support during Bill’s final days.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11:30 am on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where a Masonic service will begin at 11:30 am, followed by a funeral service. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
