Supporting STEM Education - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Supporting STEM Education

As part of our community education and outreach initiative, Spicer-Mullikin created a special course for high schools students about how STEM education plays a role in the funeral industry. “The Science Behind Funerals” is a 40-minute, interactive presentation by our licensed funeral directors. Topics include:

  • How STEM impacts funerals; from pre-planning to funeral service, burial, and aftercare
  • Science of embalming and cremation
  • Education, training and career path of a funeral director
  • Future of Funerals
  • What’s On Your Bucket List? (a discussion and memento notebook)

Spicer-Mullikin presented at Conrad School of Science and Middletown High School, and enjoyed speaking with the students and answering their many questions. Here’s what some of the students had to say:

Good information about the engineering behind digging graves and the embalming process.”

What I liked was learning about the behind-the-scenes that goes into directing funerals that none of us realized.”

I liked how you fully explained your career and what you had to do to become a funeral director.”

Spicer-Mullikin was greatly honored to be invited to present at both schools, and look forward to continuing the educational presentation at other community schools. So, it was with great pride when we learned Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory had earned the prestigious ‘Best of the Best’ award from the National Funeral Directors Association for our STEM presentation, “The Science Behind Funerals.” The distinguished award was presented during the NFDA annual conference in Boston, MA on October 30, 2017.
